The devil was in the detail!

With 2 last minute competitions left in December my first competition year has come to an end and although we could only participate in 1 of these 2 competitions, and that one did not score high, we did manage to become BELGIAN BBQ CHAMPION, in the ribs category!

Before the last 2 races we were in first place at Ribben and also Overall.

We were not able to defend that last ranking well, so we would like to congratulate Smoke on The Wild Side on achieving the Overall victory!

Next year we will put them through their paces again!

Despite the lower points, our ribs remained standing, with a nice 3rd place with only 0.035 points less than number 2.

If you scroll back a bit on my blog, you can read how I went looking for the perfect rib a year ago. So after a lot of research, I thought we would score well with this.

It was a great surprise that in the first competition we participated in we scored surprisingly high with a place number 4, 5 and 6 out of 31 participants.

In ribs we came 18th.

But from then on it went very well because in the competitions afterwards we were in the ribs category respectively:

Ninove (double match) : : 4th (and first Belgian team), again 4th (and again first Belgian team)

Meetjesland: 1st, with a staggering score of 179.4. (and of course best Belgian team)

Saint Nicholas : 6th

Helshoven: 3rd (and best Belgian team)

So out of the 6 matches we were the best Belgian team in this category no less than 4 times.

When you look at it that way, it was in line with expectations, but still... it was exciting!

Before I started this season I heard from some people that a top 10 would already be a nice result.

with perhaps a better result every now and then.

So I was prepared for that.

In the end we achieved the following results in 6 competitions in the different categories:

7 x a call (places 5 to 10)

and 7 x a walk (places 1 to 5)

including a first place for Ribben in Meetjesland, 3rd Brisket (Meetjesland) and 3rd ribs Helshoven

In the Overall ranking we achieved

Lommel 6th

Ninove 12th

Ninove 7th and best Belgian team

Meetjesland 2nd and therefore RESERVED GRAND CHAMPION and best Belgian team

Saint Nicholas 14th

Helshoven : 10th

In the last 2 games we scored less which cost us a nice ranking overall. Don't worry, we have to cook better anyway, so that is the challenge.

Finally we had the honor to also go to the World Cup: The Jack

In addition to the great experience and meetings, we also achieved a walk through in the BBQ sauce category, achieving a shared 4th place out of about 80 participants.

In short, a nicely filled trophy cabinet with the title BELGIAN CHAMPION BBQ - RIBS well deserved on top!

This concludes this series of articles about 'I am participating in the Belgian Championship Low and Slow BBQ. Help!' and I hope that those who followed this series enjoyed it as much as we did.

Many thanks to my teammate Dimitri, because without him none of this would have been possible.

I'm going to start saving again, and hopefully next season will be just as much fun!

Greetings from

The Belgian Champion :-)
