Sunday, just after noon. We are still recovering and relaxing at the Butt Ranch.
In the distance we see a car pulling into the driveway.
Someone says, “That's Tuffy.”
Uh, wait? I think
Tuffy, here? I think
The car stops close to us, and the man who steps out is Tuffy Stone. The Professor.
Tuffy won The Jack 3 times, the only one. Tuffy is maniacally busy with the technique behind BBQ.
Tuffy is one of those absolute greats of the BBQ world.
Tuffy gets out and starts unloading all sorts of things from his trunk including a vintage blue 28 inch Weber.
“Hi Y'all,” he says, joining us in a friendly manner.
Turns out he wants to use the opportunity to film some more Kook videos at the Butt Ranch for his YouTube channel.
And whether we think that's okay because we're going to have to eat it too.
And just like that, we were suddenly sitting front row in a Tuffy Stone cooking show. A new dream.
The hours pass, darkness falls, the recordings stop and the fire bowl is lit.
As if it had all been planned, the day turns into an evening, and the evening into a special atmospheric evening, with stories told by Byron & Tuffy.
Until suddenly The Professor speaks up and jumps up full of energy, walks to his car, grabs some supplies, and lights a fire.
He is starting a mini masterclass in Fire management especially for the Belgian team (us).
How does fire work, and how do you build an ideal fire in a smoker. Stories about how he discovered it and taught it to his father. (His father did fire management for Tuffy's bbq team for years)
What happened there, at that moment, was magical.
The evening came to an end. It had been beautiful. This week was perfect and could not end better.
Unless, the morning after, when Tuffy cooked up some breakfast for us and especially his YouTube channel.
Bye Jack, bye Byron, bye Tuffy, bye Butt Ranch.
We'll be back. Someday.
